Bike Gear

There comes a time with most bikes that the bike gear cassette needs to be changed. When this time comes, the person who knows how to change the bike gear cassette can save some money by performing this maintenance at home.

Changing a bike gear cassette can be done by doing the following:

• Mental note – Take a mental note of what gear the bike is in. This will allow a person to put the bike gear cassette back in the right place.

• Take apart – Open the cam and unscrew the back of the wheel. The chain then should be eased away from the wheel.

• Remove the quick release – After the quick release has been removed, a cassette locking tool should be used to place in the grooves of the lock ring, which is situated in the center part of the bike gear cassette.

• Use the chain whip – The chain whip should be used to hold the cassettes in place. Then, find an adjustable wrench and place it on the lock ring. Pull the wrench and the chain whip in opposite directions to loosen the bike gear cassette.

A person who follows these steps must remember what he or she did so that the bike gear cassette can be replaced after it has been worked on.
