Bike Racks

Bike racks are a convenient way to transport bikes. Some racks lock. Some don’t. Some can accommodate many bikes, some just one. When shopping for racks use these guidelines:

• Some will lock – There are a number of bike racks that can be purchased equipped with locks. These bike racks are optimal thanks to the fact that they help a person protect his or her bike. However, if a person feels comfortable that a bike will not be stolen, then there are many bike racks that are sold without these locks as well.

• Some require bikes to be altered
– Some of the bike racks that are used on cars require that the person placing the bike on the rack be able to remove the front wheel from the bike in order to be able to store the bike on the bike racks.
These bike racks can be advantageous because they tend to be a little sturdier. They also offer a lower clearance. However, a person who owns a bike that does not have a front wheel that is easy to detach might consider using a different kind of rack.

• Some accommodate many
– Most bike racks will accommodate at least two bikes, however there are other types of racks that are able to accommodate as many as four bikes at a time. These bike racks are nice for families; however it is important that the bikes are precisely stacked when used on the racks.
