Bikes
Although training bikes are the safest bikes, this does
not mean that parents do not need to pay attention to their children
when they ride these bikes. Some of the things that are good for parents
to know about training bikes include:
• Size – The sizes of training bikes are
given in the sizes of wheel diameter, while adult bikes are sized according
to the size of the bike frame. Children’s bikes range in sizes
from 12 to 24.
• Training wheel use – Typically training wheels
are used on bikes that have wheel diameters of 12 inches. These bikes
are typically appropriate for children who are between two and four
years old.
• Avoid hand brakes – Most training bikes avoid
hand brakes. It is hard enough for a child to get used to balancing
himself or herself on a bike. Trying to coordinate so that he or she
can break with his or her hands can be difficult. Also, many younger
children have difficulty being able to squeeze hand brakes tight enough
in order to use them effectively.
• Head protection – Even though training bikes
provide an extra level of safety thanks to the fact that they have training
wheels, this does not mean that a child cannot fall. In fact, if a child
is going down a hill and then hits a turn, there is a very good chance
he or she could lose control. In these instances, helmets are always
useful to wear while on bikes.
